Forever Fangirl: Free Comic Book Day 2012

Free Comic Book Day!Now in its 11th year, Free Comic Book Day is an annual event where local comic shops throughout the country and around the world offer readers new and old an opportunity to sample new titles and new stories all for free! Whether you’ve been reading for years or you’ve never picked up a book in your life, Free Comic Book Day, held the first Saturday of May every year, has something for you.

Like Superheroes?  How about Avengers: The Age of Ultron, written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Bryan Hitch, the start of  the upcoming Avengers vs the Intelligencia? Or maybe, DC Comics’s The New 52 Special Edition, a look at what’s happening at DC in 2012 with an exclusive story by Geoff Johns and previews of the New 52 “Second Wave” titles, including Batman Incorporated, Dial H, Earth 2, G.I. Combat, The Ravagers and Worlds’ Finest.

A franchise fanatic? Dark Horse Comics is offering a two for one with the Star Wars/Serenity Flip Book. Han Solo and Chewie in a mess after a deal gone wrong on one side, Mal and the Crew of Serenity in a mess… well, just in a mess on the other side. Both stories are written by Zack Whedon with art by Fábio Moon and Christian Dalla Vecchia. Dark Horse’s other contribution to this event is another flip book, this one pairing Buffy the Vampire Slayer written by Andrew Chambliss, with Felicia Day penning an all new installment of The Guild.

What about new readers, the little ones who haven’t yet discovered the joy of New Comic Wednesdays or understand the value of a nice crisp bag and board? Does FCBD offer anything  for the little guys? The answer, of course, is yes. Shame on you for thinking otherwise? Your kiddies like those weird animation shows that make you recall many a dizzy night back when you were in college? Oni Press is offering Yo Gabba Gabba: Free Comic Book Time, while Bongo counters with Bongo Free For All/ Spongebob Freestyle. Plus new versions of old classics like The Peanuts, Sonic, Donald Duck, Smurfs, Megaman and much much more.

So, whatever your fancy, May 5th get out of your house, and get into your local comic shop and see what they have for you. Pick up a few trades while you’re there, some toys, a t-shirt or two, and mostly just go support the brick and mortar stores while you still can. In this age of digital downloads, and web based “new media,” there’s simply no better feeling, than to hold a brightly colored story of heroes and villains, friends and strangers, slice of life to the most outlandish space opera in your hands. Celebrate comics, this weird hybrid of text and visual, and give thanks to those diehard shop owners and clerks who struggle on a day by day basis to give you an opportunity to watch epic poetry in spandex. I’ll be working at my shop DJ’s Universal Comics in Studio City, California, proud to be a part of a storytelling genre that’s unlike any other.

Besides, you’re all going to see Avengers the day before, so it’s not like you won’t be in the mood.
