With BuyIndieComics.com and DWAP Productions’ appearance (booth 618) this weekend, September 15 and 16 at Comikaze, convention season is officially underway in Los Angeles. Last year’s (just) Comikaze was proof to me after several horribly failed attempts by the larger comic book community that it was possible to put on a good comic book show in Los Angeles. It was not a perfect show but it seemed to be advertised to the right people – they came in droves and they were buying, even indie comics. The show must have done well, Stan Lee put his name on it.
In fact, I was so excited about the show, I accidentally applied twice – yeah, I have been working like a chicken about to get his head cut off and somehow, I messed that up big time. But no problem, the Comikaze crew took care of me and all is good. Thanks guys. The show is run by a good group of people – I met several of them at an LA comics pro dinner and they came off as fun, if a little crazy but you absolutely must be crazy to be a part of the comic book industry. Or you put on bad shows.
So, this year, with Stan Lee’s moniker firmly planted before the Comikaze part of the name, the show gets a good bit of mainstream clout. Which admittedly, as an indie, that scares the hell out of me. My worst fear is that less indie friendly buyers will come to the show because it’s does not have that less-than-popular feel to it but also that the never-read-anything-but-the-mainstream fankids will buy out all of the passes. Which, while that’s great of the Comikaze crew that have as I mentioned before done my right, it is as a general notion bad for me, the indie guy. We shall see – hopefully we all succeed.
Come back to BuyIndieComics.com for commentary during and after the show.
Never enough said.
