Omaha Perez and I have been convention buddies for several years now. I really enjoyed his books Bodhisattva and Holmes and when we see each other shows, we always take a second to catch up on life and projects. So, when he handed me an issue of The Drude, I was both happy for him and excited to read it. After reading it, I am still excited for Perez but I also have to ask, “What kind of drugs is he on and where can I get some?”
Perez opens The Drude with the protagonist not only dead but lying on a slab in the morgue. To help bring the creepy in, he does not even try to explain this – it’s just part of The Drude’s way of life apparently. So then there’s drug use, a black cat and a short, bizarre appearance from “Aleister” which really can only be read to appreciate. Later, while The Drude is on stage with his band (yeah, he’s in a punk band named MILF), he has an Illuminati-filled and somewhat questionable interaction/vision of reptilian people that are apparently abducting his girlfriend.
For a 24 page preview edition, there is a lot going here but it’s all fun and drugs and rock ‘n roll. Based in and around my own area, Glendale CA and with a sexy-reptilian reference to The Graduate on the cover and a healthy interest in seeing Perez succeed, I can’t help but be interested in keeping up with this title.
