It’s easy to understand how I would love a book like The Gifted. It’s about a wolf, I love animals, especially dogs. It’s for the most part silent, I dig the silent books. But it’s way more than all of that. The Gifted is a wonderful story and beautifully painted. Most importantly, The Gifted is a wonderful example of what is possible in the comic book medium.
I discovered The Gifted when I met the Creative Mind Energy team at San Francisco’s Alternative Press Expo. They had an enforce team presence with an upper level professionalism that I appreciated. They also had extremely high quality limited edition books with a beautiful glossy print – I had to give it a try to see if the stories would live up to the outer presentation. CME delivered with The Gifted.
The Gifted is an elegant story with minimal description or words but an interesting complexity and a wonderful finish. There is only a small amount of very smart but illegible dialogue and simple sound effects. I can talk about the writing in this book all day but let met take a second to talk about the art. It’s smart and immensely skilled and the minimal sound effects become part of the page and panel layout. There are panels and pages of this book that could easily be pinups but what is wonderful about them is that they actually work incredibly well to tell an amazing story.
