The Walking Dead’s Free Comic Book Day 2013 contribution was a book that seems like it’s been in the making since Robert Kirkman first launched his title. It’s a single anthology issue of 4 stories that each tell the backstories of 4 iconic characters from the series: The Governor, Michonne, Morgan and Tyreese.
All of these are characters that at one time or another were The Walking Dead protagonist, Rick Grimes’ counterpoint – they’ve all had huge impacts on Rick’s life and it is only fitting that they be given a little extra attention. As it turns out, a free comic book telling a little something about each was a great place to start.
How did Michonne end up with a sword and two bitter friends? Where did Tyrese get his hammer? What happened to Morgan after Rick left him to find his family? Who are the heads that The Governor had in his fish tanks? Well, all of this very important ground is covered in The Walking Dead’s Free Comic book Day 2013 issue. It’s great stuff – some of it is heart-warming but much of it is as tragic as you should expect from Kirkman.
Charlie Adlard and Cliff Rathburn continue their excellent and tone-setting art duties on this Walking Dead installment. This artistic team really bring something binding and brutal to all Walking Dead stuff and this Free Comic Book Day issue is no exception. Adlard and Rathburn have rounded out a world visually, creating something that continues to make the Walking Dead a very special book to read.
While most people got it for free, The Walking Dead Free Comic Book Day 2013 issue is well worth paying for – it’s a great read for anyone that’s every enjoyed the soap-opera tragedy that is The Walking Dead.
